Exposition du 27.04.-25.08.2013 Louisa Marie Summer Louisa Marie Summer is a young German photographer, working in New York. In South Providence, Rhode Island, she met the 26 year old Jennifer, a first generation Puerto-Rican woman, and started to document her life within her community of afro-american and hispanic immigrants. Summer spent over two years tracing Jennifer’s everyday, depicting a life at the very bottom of the social ladder, under the strains of poverty and precariousness. Despite the financial difficulties, despite sickness, Jennifer herself stays optimistic, looking lovingly after her children.
Respect Goes a Long Way, the title of a short film by the artist reflects the trusting and comprehensive relationship that grew over time between the artist and the family. With her work, Louisa Marie Summer wanted to give a voice to individuals who fight poverty and despair on an everyday basis. The artist is convinced that concerned photography can play an important part in the manifestation of a social consciousness and has the power to raise the awareness of the public, or at least change their way of looking. |
