Emotional Extractions – Images of Disappearance : Duarte Perry

curator(s): Denzler Julian
artist(s): Duarte Perry

Perry employs photography as a tool for composition and reflection. The arrangement and presentation of the series vary depending on the exhibition’s context. For the exhibition at the Portuguese Cultural Center in Luxembourg, he selected eight images from a larger collection, spanning the emotional process from beginning to end. The central theme of disappearance is reflected in the way the photographs are displayed, giving them an aura of transience.

According to cultural theorist Aleida Assmann, forgetting – not remembering – is the default mode of human and social existence. Memories do not remain intact; they condense, transform, and slowly fade. Remembering requires effort, a conscious act of preservation.2 Perry makes this effort through photography, translating personal recollections into refined images. His series is both an attempt to hold onto memory and a visual manifesto acknowledging the impossibility of fully capturing the past.

His series delve into fundamental questions about human transience: How do we experience the gradual disappearance of a loved one? How do memories form of moments we recognize as significant for future recollection? Can we preserve more of the essence of certain moments simply by making a greater effort to feel them?
