Identities : Portraying the Intangible

Photography is by default the most direct means to capture the seen, the direct encounter, or a first impression. So, it seems almost contradictory to conceive an exhibition in which this particular artistic medium seeks to go beyond the mere physical appearance and reveal the cracks in the carefully constructed social mask. But it is precisely the confronting nature of the camera that helps the artist to capture those moments in which the real self starts seeping through, and the viewer is confronted with the sitter’s innermost struggles, traumas, desires, and conflicts. The Kunsthalle Trier places the intangible at the centre of the exhibition and showcases the enticing photographic works of nine artists which can be defined through their personal and diverse approach to the topic, as they go beyond the surface level to discuss identity as a self-searching, self-finding, and self-representation as self-discovery.
