Serge Ecker : Murmures

With photography, Serge Ecker returns to his first loves. murmurare, in particular, marks a pivotal moment in his journey as an artist—one who is constantly troubled by questions of his own legitimacy, a doubt that spreads like poison within the artistic sphere. At the same time, he is deeply anxious about the state of the world, the vulnerability of life, and its fleeting nature.

The uniqueness of murmurare lies in its mirror effect, in how Nature—with a capital “N”—becomes a projection of Ecker’s personal nature, shaped by his experiences and torn between abandonment, absence, fragility, imposture, as well as between tragedy, humor, and critique. It is a kind of self-exploration, yet by embodying the effects of absence or the reality of presence, photography transcends intimate testimony to question the broader anxieties of our time. As such, murmurare carries a universal, or at the very least collective, socially engaged significance.

However, there is no doom-laden discourse here, no moralizing tone—rather, a reconciliation of past and present, a process of exorcism and soothing, a sensitivity tinged with resignation.
