The international exhibition, held as part of the European Month of Photography Luxembourg, is dedicated to the tension between truth, authenticity and manipulation in the photographic image. Under the title ‘Reconstructing Reality – Photography in a Post-Factual Era’, the Kunsthalle Trier (Germany) presents emerging and established artists who critically examine the construction and deconstruction of reality.
The exhibition examines how photography is used as a medium to control perception and what role it plays in an age in which the boundaries between fact and fiction are becoming increasingly blurred. The works presented question the credibility of visual information and address the manipulability of images as a central challenge of the digital present. Both analogue and digital processes are used to explore the possibilities and limitations of the photographic medium.
The exhibition brings together works by Sissel Annett, Marc Josef Baruth, Matthias Grund, Lisa Hoffmann, Sonja Irouschek, Lia Meret Lehmkuhl, Eva Rosenstiel, Valerie Schmidt and Stefanie Schroeder. Their works show different artistic strategies for questioning constructions of reality: while some positions rely on documentary methods, others experiment with digital interventions or staged visual worlds. The spectrum ranges from subtle manipulations of artificial intelligence to obvious deconstructions of photographic reality through painting.
By incorporating installation and interactive elements, the Kunsthalle Trier is expanding the classical exhibition practice and creating a space for reflection in which the public can experience the mechanisms of image generation. In this way, ‘Reconstructing Reality’ encourages critical examination of the power of images and raises awareness of the construction of reality in a world increasingly shaped by images.
