Bruce Eesly: New Farmer & Tamiko Thiel: Waldwandel / Forest Flux

New Farmer by Bruce Eesly presents itself as a historical document and seems to reiterate the success of the Green Revolution: genetic manipulations allow for the creation of new crop varieties, resulting in more abundant and higher-quality harvests. However, as the story unfolds, cracks begin to appear. The images slightly exceed the bounds of credibility, eventually becoming absurd. These are not documentary photographs from the 1960s, as the brochure suggests, but rather images generated by artificial intelligence.

Tamiko Thiel’s pioneering work in complex systems visualization represents a unique convergence of technical expertise and artistic vision. Drawing from her early experience designing the Connection Machine supercomputer CM-1/CM-2 1986/1987) at Thinking Machines Corporation, Thiel has developed innovative approaches to making complex social and environmental systems accessible to public understanding. Her work, Waldwandel/Forest Flux exemplifies this synthesis.Through augmented reality, Thiel and her collaborator, the artist, create an immersive experience that transforms abstract data about forest ecology into tangible, emotional encounters.
